Shipping & Logistics FAQ
Answers About Our Freight Brokerage Services
We know that handing over your commercial freight requires absolute trust in the people managing the route.
To make your planning easier, we gathered the most common questions our dispatch team receives from manufacturers and distributors.
Find direct answers below regarding how we secure trucks, screen carriers, and execute deliveries across the greater East Tennessee trade valley and beyond.

Carrier Vetting & Brokerage Operations
How do you select the carriers that move our freight?
We run strict background and safety compliance checks on every independent owner-operator before they arrive at your facility. By operating as a non-asset broker, we aren’t forced to use a specific set of trucks. If a carrier doesn’t meet our strict safety standards, we simply don’t dispatch them.
How does a non-asset broker make my supply chain safer?
Large asset-based trucking companies often struggle to maintain their equipment. Federal data shows that some regional fleets have vehicle out-of-service rates over 50%, meaning half their trucks fail roadside inspections.
We bypass that risk entirely by only sourcing capacity from top-tier carriers with proven, reliable equipment.
Are my shipments insured while in transit?
Absolutely. We require every carrier in our network to hold a minimum of $100,000 in active cargo insurance.
Furthermore, our brokerage operations are backed by a $75,000 surety bond through Pinnacle National Bank, and we maintain a verified 98 out of 100 Trust Score with federal regulators.
Why is a high carrier out-of-service rate dangerous for my freight?
When a truck fails a roadside DOT inspection, the inspector grounds the vehicle immediately. Your freight sits on the side of the highway until a mechanic fixes the truck or another trailer arrives.
We prevent these massive delays by screening out carriers with high mechanical failure rates.
Who actually handles my account day-to-day?
We don’t operate a loud, high-turnover sales floor where you get passed around from person to person. As a family-owned business with decades of history, we assign you a single point of contact.
You deal directly with the person managing your freight from the initial quote to the final delivery.
How fast can I get a shipping rate for a local commercial load?
We process quote requests right away. When you submit your load details through our site, it immediately alerts our dispatchers so they can match your freight with an available dry van or box truck in minutes, entirely skipping the cluttered email inbox phase.
What legal liabilities do shippers face under recent broker court rulings?
Recent high-court rulings confirm that shippers can be held directly liable for negligent carrier selection if they work with a broker that utilizes unsafe or unvetted trucks.
We protect your business from these massive legal liabilities by running deep background checks and regulatory safety screens on every truck we assign.
What is the difference between a property broker and a motor carrier?
A property broker legally arranges transportation for compensation by matching shippers with authorized motor carriers, but does not own the trucks or haul the freight themselves.
A motor carrier is the actual entity that owns the physical assets and performs the over-the-road transit.
How does working with a family-owned brokerage benefit my business compared to large logistics firms?
Large, corporate freight brokerages operate fast-paced, high-volume sales floors where accounts are routinely shifted between low-experience brokers.
As a family-owned business with a 27-year heritage, we offer personal stability and consistent pricing models that protect you from high staff turnover.
What is a surety bond and how does it protect my commercial shipments?
A freight broker surety bond is a financial guarantee required by federal regulators to ensure financial accountability.
Our active $75,000 surety bond is fully backed by Pinnacle National Bank, giving our B2B shipping partners complete financial peace of mind for every shipment we arrange.
Do you use an internal load board or public spot-market boards?
While we maintain access to digital carrier networks, we prioritize our own private network of long-standing regional carrier-partners. This allows us to avoid the unpredictable service levels and pricing spikes common on public spot-market boards.

East Tennessee Regional Transit
Which local shipping corridors do you cover?
Our dispatch team heavily focuses on the commercial pipelines intersecting the Interstate 40 and Interstate 75 corridors. This gives us rapid access to the major business parks and distribution centers throughout Knox County and the surrounding commercial trade valleys.
Can you handle dedicated runs between local manufacturing plants?
Yes. Among many others, we coordinate daily and weekly contract runs between facilities across the broader East Tennessee footprint, covering areas like Alcoa, Maryville, Oak Ridge, Clinton, Lenoir City, and Morristown.
How do you handle regional traffic and mountain weather delays?
We manage shipments proactively. Instead of waiting for a driver to call in stuck, our dispatchers monitor regional highway conditions and weather patterns. We actively route our carrier-partners around interstate traffic snarls and construction zones to keep your assembly lines running.
We have a facility near McGhee Tyson Airport; can you pick up there?
Yes, that is well within our core local operating territory. We can quickly position sprinter vans or box trucks for immediate pickups near the airport or the Pellissippi Corporate Center.
Do you service the Forks of the River Industrial Park?
We do. We have deep experience navigating the major industrial parks across the region and can match your outbound loads with the correct flatbed or enclosed trailer required by your specific loading bay setup.
How far out do you manage local daily freight?
While our headquarters is in Knoxville, our operational reach spans the entire commercial territory extending through East Tennessee, its bordering zones, as well as Nationwide. If your freight originates in or is destined for the regional valley, we have the carrier relationships to move it.
How deep is your carrier network within the immediate local trading valley?
We manage a dense network of independent owner-operators and small regional fleets stationed throughout the local trading valley. This immediate access allows us to secure quick truck turnarounds for local manufacturers without relying on long out-of-town deadheads.
How do you adjust routing for commercial trucks passing the major mountain passes?
The terrain surrounding our regional trade footprint introduces unique transit variables, including steep grades and rapid mountain weather changes. Our dispatchers track regional conditions continuously, ensuring drivers take preferred freight routes that protect heavy machinery or delicate pallets.
Do you service out-of-town manufacturing centers like Greeneville or Kingsport?
Yes. Our core regional footprint seamlessly extends out to adjacent manufacturing hubs including Greeneville, Kingsport, and the broader Tri-Cities commercial trade area, keeping regional supply chains tightly linked.

Specific Equipment Capabilities
What size dry vans do you broker?
We source standard 53-foot dry vans featuring swing doors with 110-inch clearance heights. This allows for maximum pallet space and easy forklift access for high-volume commercial shipping.
Do you have trucks for facilities without loading docks?
Yes. If your pickup or delivery point requires ground-level loading, we dispatch 26-foot box trucks explicitly equipped with heavy-duty lift gates and pallet jacks.
How do you secure fragile or sensitive freight?
We source enclosed trailers equipped with interior E-track systems. Drivers use these wall-mounted tracks along with heavy-duty straps and load levelers to lock your sensitive electronics or industrial components firmly in place during transit.
What is the best option for a fast, smaller shipment?
For tight timelines and smaller pallet counts, we dispatch high-velocity sprinter vans. These vehicles move quickly through traffic, do not require weigh-station stops, and deliver your goods direct-to-door.
Can you handle open deck transport for industrial machinery?
Yes. We match awkward or heavy B2B equipment with 48-foot and 53-foot flatbeds and step decks. We also source gooseneck hotshots for lighter open-deck needs.
Do you broker Conestoga trailers?
We do. If your machinery requires overhead crane loading but still needs complete weather protection during transit, we can source a Conestoga trailer to fit those exact requirements.
What is the maximum weight for a standard box truck?
A standard 26-foot box truck can typically handle up to 8,000 pounds. If your freight exceeds that limit, your dedicated representative will simply size you up to a full dry van to safely accommodate the extra weight.
What fits inside a sprinter van?
A high-roof sprinter van has enough floor space to comfortably hold up to three standard-sized pallets loaded in a single row, with a maximum payload limit of roughly 3,000 pounds.
What are the standard loading dock requirements for a 53-foot dry van?
A standard 53-foot dry van requires a commercial loading dock with an average height of 48 to 52 inches. If your warehouse bay deviates from this standard clearance, let your representative know so we can confirm the appropriate trailer specs.
Can you supply flatbeds with specific securement accessories like chains or binders?
Yes. Heavy industrial components and metal coils require specialized securement. We explicitly vet open-deck carriers to guarantee they carry the correct count of heavy-duty chains, binders, and pipe stakes required for your specific industrial cargo.
What interior width is available on the sprinter vans you source?
The cargo vans and high-roof sprinter vans in our partner network provide a standard interior width of 53 inches between the wheel wells, allowing standard pallets to sit completely flat on the floor.

National & Cross-Border Shipping
Can you move freight from Tennessee to the West Coast?
Yes. While we have a dense local footprint, our carrier network extends across the entire North American continent.
We routinely execute full truckload and partial truckload long-haul shipments from the Southeast to the West Coast.
Do you handle shipments going into Canada?
We coordinate seamless cross-border freight transport. We manage the specific carrier credentials required to move your commercial goods smoothly from the US into Canadian provinces without delay.
What do I need to prepare for a Canadian shipment?
You will need your standard commercial invoices, packing lists, and a Bill of Lading, along with a designated customs broker to clear the goods.
Your dedicated representative will walk you through exactly what standard customs documentation is needed before the truck arrives.
Will my freight be transferred to different trucks at the border?
No. We focus on dedicated, through-trailer transport. The carrier that picks up your freight at your loading dock is the exact same carrier that delivers it to the final receiver in Canada, reducing the risk of damage.
How do you track long-haul shipments across the country?
We maintain direct, daily communication with our drivers. Instead of forcing you to log into a complicated portal, your single point of contact provides accurate, real-time location updates whenever you need them.
Can you source capacity in the Midwest to bring raw materials back to our plant?
Absolutely. Inbound logistics is a massive part of what we do. We can source empty dry vans and flatbeds at your supplier’s facility and manage the inbound transit so your materials arrive precisely when your production line needs them.
What is the difference between FTL and LTL options for national routes?
Full Truckload (FTL) assigns an entire dedicated trailer to your cargo for direct, uninterrupted transit. Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) combines smaller commercial shipments into a single trailer, which is ideal for cost-sharing when your cargo does not require a full 53-foot trailer.
Can you coordinate long-haul freight originating outside of Tennessee?
Yes. Our non-asset brokerage model allows us to source compliant equipment anywhere in the United States or Canada. We regularly manage over-the-road freight that moves entirely outside our home state for our contract corporate clients.
How do you manage freight claims on long-distance movements?
In the rare event of transit damage, your dedicated IWL contact is there to help you navigate the claims process and assist with submission to the carrier’s insurer.

Operational Boundaries & Service Restrictions
Why do you choose not to haul hazardous materials?
We strictly avoid Hazmat loads to protect our clients. Hazardous materials require highly specialized placarding and present extreme volatility. Keeping these materials out of our network minimizes transit friction and keeps our general commercial freight moving faster.
Do you offer drop-trailer services?
We focus exclusively on live-loading and live-unloading. Drop-trailer programs often lead to equipment shortages and detention disputes. Live loading ensures we maintain strict, real-time control over exactly when your freight leaves the dock and when it arrives.
Can you move oversized or wide-load equipment?
We restrict our operations to standard legal dimensions. Oversized freight requires complex state permitting and pilot cars, which drastically slows down transit times. Sticking to standard dimensions guarantees rapid execution for high-value freight.
Do you handle refrigerated or temperature-controlled produce?
No. We focus entirely on dry B2B freight, light industrial equipment, and standard retail goods. Temperature-controlled shipping carries a high risk of spoilage claims if a reefer unit fails.
Will my freight be consolidated with other companies' goods?
No. We specialize in dedicated, exclusive-use transport. When you book a truck with us, your shipment is the only freight inside that vehicle. This prevents the sorting damage and terminal delays associated with standard LTL consolidation.
Do you require pallet exchange?
We do not participate in pallet exchange programs. All shipments are treated as straight dock-to-dock deliveries without the hassle of tracking and exchanging wood.
Will the driver load or unload the freight?
We run a strict no-touch freight model. The shipper is responsible for loading the trailer, and the receiver is responsible for unloading it. We do not hire lumpers or require drivers to manually handle your freight.
Do you deliver to residential addresses?
We handle commercial B2B freight only. All pickups and deliveries must occur at commercial facilities, industrial parks, or retail businesses equipped to handle commercial vehicles.
Do you provide ocean freight forwarding services?
No, our operational capabilities focus exclusively on domestic and cross-border over-the-road transport. We handle truckload and partial freight using dry vans, box trucks, flatbeds, and cargo vans across land routes only.
Can you broker shipments that require rail-ramp drop-offs?
We operate entirely as an over-the-road non-asset broker and do not coordinate intermodal rail ramp drop-offs. Every shipment we arrange stays on a dedicated commercial motor vehicle from warehouse pickup to final destination.
